New Delhi: (Lord Media) The spread of the Nipah virus in India has raised concerns over the hosting of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India confirmed only two cases in West Bengal as of December 2025, but independent reports suggest over five cases in Kolkata, including healthcare workers affected by nosocomial clusters.
The Nipah virus has a fatality rate of 40 to 75 percent, and Indian authorities admit it poses a significant threat. There are allegations of fact suppression to maintain control before the 2026 Cricket World Cup, as Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is among the host venues.
Observers warn that poor sanitation and unsafe conditions during international sports events in India could endanger players, officials, and fans. Foreign players at the India Open Super 750 Badminton Tournament have also complained about dirty training halls and poor conditions.
There is a call for the ICC to relocate all matches to Sri Lanka, which offers better health monitoring and safe facilities. Continuing events in India could endanger lives and set a precedent of irresponsible global safety priorities.
